What are you working for? No seriously, what do you want to accomplish in your career? It's important to have a compass in place to guide us. Setting goals helps us to fight burn out and give a purpose to the overwhelming feeling of being busy. Everyone is motivated by something, whether it's more vacation time, early retirement, or building an awesome social media following. No matter what drives you, it's important to have a focus. Here are three things that can help you avoid distractions and temptations to reach your goals.
1. Find a salon that supports your goals and, if possible, find a salon where the goal is possible. If the salon’s vision is aligned with yours, it’s more likely that working there will help get you closer to your goal. People who get your excitement and cheer you on as you go helps to build and maintain momentum. Surround yourself with like-minded people to push you. If you have a tight community, you’ll be able to look objectively at my own progress and strive to be better. Remember to celebrate whenever possible!
2. Set regular, measurable goals. I've found a lot of success in reverse engineering the target. You know when you set that New Year's resolution to start hitting the gym? We always start with the best of intentions. Change our eating habits and hit the gym hard. Sometimes it's a little too hard all at once and we quickly lose momentum. Ask yourself what the big picture is over a 5-10 year span. Once you've got a clear picture of what that goal is, work backward to set benchmarks at a yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily level. It may seem like such a small price to pay daily but over time the result will snowball and with a little consistency, the goal will be met. So let's say the goal is to build a killer color business. A great place to start might be to have a conversation or recommendation about color with your clients. The more you make it a part of the conversation, the more people will start to warm up to the idea of adding it to their services. Soon, you’ll have plenty of examples of your work and happy clients that will spread the word.
3. Track your progress and do it regularly. Ritualize the process by setting up a system of holding yourself accountable. At the beginning of every week celebrate the victories from the previous week and use that momentum to drive through, what can be for most people, the slowest part of the week. That which can be m assured can be improved. So set up your goal setting in whatever way makes the most sense. Maybe you like hard numbers, dream boards, or even charts and graphs. Lastly, tell a lot of people. The more the better! Not only will people be excited to hear about your ambitions they'll start to bring it up in conversation, which helps hold you accountable.
I spent the first few years being a hairdresser who had no clear vision of what they wanted to do. I can't really say I have much to show for it. Once I learned how to organize my thoughts and dreams into a system I could track and measure I've found it easier to stay motivated, cut out distractions, and stay passionate about what I do. I'd love to hear how you stay focused! Drop your favorite tips into the comments below.
