I love red everything, whether it be a classic red lip or manicure, but all reds are not created equal. From burgundy to fire engine red, making sure you help clients find the right red polish to complement their skin tone is key. Once you find the perfect red, your client’s manicure could become a dazzling conversation piece or their signature look.
Clients with fair skin tones: To really complement fair skin tones with pink-based undertones, blue-based reds or pink-based red polishes sing! Berry-colored red polishes pick up the pink tones in your client’s complexion very well and really makes the red pop.
Clients with light skin tones: For light complexions with a yellow undertone, use orange-based reds. These orange-red shades pick up the golden undertones and can be very flattering with your client’s skin color.
Clients with medium skin tones: Medium skin tones can be versatile depending on the season. During winter months, medium skin tones can pull off dark, deep reds. For an every-day look, true reds will be a perfect match.
Clients with olive skin tones: Olive skin tones have a yellow-green undertone, which makes brick reds and rust colored nails really shine. These earthy rouge tones will warm up your client’s complexion and blend effortlessly with their skin tone.
Clients with caramel skin tones: Caramel complexions also have a rich yellow-based undertone. To really complement your client’s skin tone, use a true blue red. These red polishes will pick up the warmth in your client’s skin tone.
Clients with dark/mocha skin tones: Dark or mocha skin tones have a yellow undertone. These complexion types can get away with a few red polish shades. True reds, wine colors, or orange reds work well for this skin tone.
Whatever color you and your client decide is best for them and their skin tone, make sure to go the extra mile and add textures, nail accessories, and nail art to match the season or occasion. For clients that go red all year long, these extra touches will help them try different twists on their signature look.
