Verne Lehmberg, Judy Lehmberg

  • Published

Overview

VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS IN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES brings the field to you, with dynamic panoramas, videos, photographs, maps, and quizzes covering important topics within environmental science. A case study approach covers the issues of keystone species, climate change's role in extinctions, invasive species, the evolution of a species due to its environment, and an ecosystem approach to sustaining biodiversity. Students are engaged, interacting with real issues to help them think critically about the world around them.

Verne Lehmberg, Lee College

Verne Lehmberg holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry from Southwest Texas University and a Ph. D. in environmental engineering from Texas A&M University. He has taught college inorganic and organic chemistry, physics and environmental science. He started the environmental science program at Lee College, Baytown, Texas over 25 years ago and wrote the lab manual used in that course. Lehmberg integrated field studies in all his environmental science classes, ranging from local weekend trips to study carnivorous plant habitat to six-week summer field programs to the Grand Canyon, the Tetons, and Yellowstone. During the summer trips students completed the entire four-hour environmental science class in the field, including labs and written examinations. He has been a photographer for over 40 years and took all of the photos for the environmental science virtual field trips. His photos have appeared in magazines ranging from the National Association of Biology Teacher's journal to 'The Fly Fisher.'

Judy Lehmberg,

  • Interactive: Dynamic panoramas, stunning photographs, video with an audio tour guide, quizzing, and Google Earth combine to engage the student and teach them about important environmental issues.
  • Self-contained: No references to a textbook – foundational information is provided so that students may read to prepare for the field trip, or use as a review tool.
  • An engaging way to teach about issues using case studies – not just to replace field trips. Use in lecture or lab, as homework or extra credit, or to prepare or review for a physical field trip.
  • Each field trip is based on a fundamental concept, making it easy to correlate to any environmental science syllabus.
  • Critical thinking questions throughout make students think about what they see and learn at each point, holding them accountable.
1. Climate Change.
2. Keystone Species.
3. The Evolution of Carnivorous Plants.
4. Invasive Species.
5. Sustaining Biodiversity.
