Overview

Described by many as a comprehensive, yet fun and easy-to-read introductory text, THE WORLD OF THE COUNSELOR offers students an overview of the counseling profession. Structured around the CACREP core curriculum areas, the book helps students gain an understanding of the professional identity of the counselor; examine the history and current trends of the profession; review important standards such as ethics, credentialing, accreditation, and multicultural and advocacy competencies; and learn basic content related to topics such as counseling theory, counseling skills, group work, family counseling, consultation, supervision, social and cultural issues, normal development and psychopathology, career development, research, and assessment. The fifth edition has numerous changes, including updated references, new information on DSM-5, updates about the current status of CACREP accreditation, and revised information to reflect the new ACA ethics code.

Edward S. Neukrug, Old Dominion University

Edward S. Neukrug is the former Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling and currently Professor of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University, Dr. Edward S. Neukrug has taught counselor education and human services for over thirty years. In addition, he has worked as a substance abuse counselor, a counselor at a crisis center, an outpatient therapist at a mental health center, an associate school psychologist, a school counselor, and as a private practice psychologist and licensed professional counselor. Dr. Neukrug has written dozens of articles and chapters in books, has authored eight books, and was the editor of THE SAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THEORY IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY. Books he has written include: EXPERIENCING THE WORLD OF THE COUNSELOR: A WORKBOOK FOR COUNSELOR EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS (4th Edition); COUNSELING THEORY AND PRACTICE; SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR HUMAN SERVICE PROFESSIONALS; and ESSENTIALS OF TESTING AND ASSESSMENT FOR COUNSELORS, SOCIAL WORKERS, AND PSYCHOLOGISTS (3rd Edition). He has also developed DVDs that demonstrate counseling skills and techniques, an interactive website where users can "meet" major theorists of counseling and psychotherapy and learn more about them and their theories (www.odu.edu/~enekrug), and an interactive survey where one can identify his or her view of human nature (http://ww2.odu.edu/~enekrug/therapists/survey.html).
  • The sections on ethical concerns at the conclusion of each chapter have been updated to reflect the new 2104 ethics code of the American Counseling Association.
  • This edition includes new information on changes to the accreditation standards of the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP), particularly in Section I, "Professional Orientation," and Section VII, "Select Specialty Areas in Counseling."
  • All content relevant to diagnosis has been revised to reflect the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5). In particular, a large section of Chapter 10, "Abnormal Development, Diagnosis, and Psychopharmacology"--which gives an overview of DSM-5--has been updated.
  • The sections on roles and functions of clinical mental health counselors (Chapter 17) and of post-secondary counselors (Chapter 18) have been revamped to address significant changes in credentialing, licensing laws, and the nature of the workplace.
  • Chapter 16, "School Counseling," has been revised by Dr. Emily Goodman-Scott. The chapter fully covers cutting edge knowledge relative to school counseling, particularly ASCA's national model and the establishment of comprehensive school counseling programs (CSCPs).
  • Information throughout the text has been streamlined where possible, with an eye to enhancing readability. In particular, Chapter 8, "Consultation and Supervision," and Chapter 13, "Research and Evaluation," have been updated with cutting edge material as well as honed to be more crisp and concise.
  • Three chapters focus on the three most preferred specialty areas in counseling: School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and Student Affairs and College Counseling (Post-Secondary Counseling).
  • An afterword provides students with tips on how to apply to a master's or a doctoral program in counselor education and related fields and how to apply for jobs in the helping professions.
  • Information about ethical, legal, and professional issues related to the chapter content appears at the conclusion of each chapter, as does information on multicultural counseling and social justice issues.
  • A segment at the conclusion of each chapter entitled "The Counselor in Process" stresses how the self-reflective counselor who is willing to risk change might deal with issues related to the chapter content.
  • A wide array of pedagogical aids includes personal vignettes, testimonials, experiential exercises, references to websites that can illuminate specific course content, and numerous tables and graphs to help students understand concepts. Case studies integrated throughout each chapter illustrate key concepts and highlight the day-to-day realities of being a counselor.
