Overview

Current and relevant to today's students, best-selling SOCIOLOGY IN OUR TIMES: THE ESSENTIALS presents the latest data and insights on behaviors, beliefs, issues, and trends in our nation and world from a sociological perspective. The eleventh edition emphasizes the themes of social change (including showing students how they can get involved), the effects of social media on communication, and the intertwining nature of politics and social policy in the United States and worldwide. Students contemplate such issues as gun control, military suicides, environmental activism, and whether employers should be allowed to "spy" on employees. First-person accounts of individuals' lived experiences illuminate topics that reflect the text's primary themes.

  • From the first edition, the text has presented strong coverage of and attention to diversity. Individuals portrayed and discussed accurately mirror the diversity in society, and research used presents classical and established contemporary sociologists -- including women and people of color -- to weave an inclusive treatment of all people into the examination of sociology. As a result, the text speaks to a wide variety of students and helps them consider the significance of the interlocking nature of individuals' class, race, and gender (and, increasingly, age) in all aspects of social life.
  • Focusing on the relationship between sociology and everyday life, each chapter begins with first person commentaries on the issue that unifies the chapter. Included in this Sociology and Everyday Life box is a quiz for students to see what they know about the issue. Answers are provided at the end of the chapter.
  • The text emphasizes several themes, including diversity, the application of sociology to everyday life, the impact of media (including social media), the importance of a global perspective, and social and global change. Boxed features (Sociology and Everyday Life, Sociology and Social Policy, and Sociology in Global Perspective) highlight the themes. Global implications of all topics are examined throughout each chapter; the Sociology in Global Perspective boxes specifically highlight our interconnected world and reveal how the sociological imagination extends beyond national borders.
  • In addition to basic reading and study aids such as key terms, a running glossary, and popular online study resources, the eleventh edition offers numerous other pedagogical aids to promote students' mastery of course content. These include chapter-opening Learning Objectives to help students focus their reading, Concept Quick Reviews, Questions for Critical Thinking, and Chapter Review summaries in question-and-answer format.
