Overview

Structured for student success and organized for instructional flexibility, QUANT A MOI…: TÉMOIGNAGES DES FRANÇAIS ET DES FRANCOPHONES, 4e is written for intermediate courses that emphasize meaningful in-class communication and in-depth exploration of Francophone cultures. Now even more user-friendly, the Fourth Edition offers a clearer and simpler structure that facilitates lesson planning and ease of progression through each chapter. It utilizes an easy-to-use MANUEL DE PRÉPARATION for independent grammar review and practice, allowing class time to be devoted to the culturally rich communicative activities found in the student textbook, MANUEL DE CLASSE. The text's easy-to-follow process approach to speaking and writing helps students effectively develop communication skills and prepares them for upper-level work. The new edition also includes extended listening comprehension practice, expanded grammar coverage, more opportunities for class discussion, and the latest teaching and learning technologies.

Jeannette D. Bragger, The Pennsylvania State University

Jeannette D. Bragger is a former professor of French at the Pennsylvania State University. Her research interests include second language acquisition and the application of theoretical constructs to the field of pedagogy and language teaching. Professor Bragger is the co-author of ALLONS-Y!; JE VEUX BIEN!; and QUANT A MOI. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Donald B. Rice, Late of Hamline University

Donald B. Rice was Professor Emeritus of French, Hamline University. His research interests included literary theory and twentieth-century French novels. He is co-author of ALLONS-Y!; JE VEUX BIEN!; and AUTOUR DE LA LITTÉRATURE. Professor Rice received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.
  • Listening comprehension practice has been extended to all six chapters. Seven new "témoins" have been added, offering new perspectives in an authentic way and also introducing cultural topics and vocabulary related to chapter themes.
  • "Magazines Cultures" (three per chapter) expand on various aspects of the chapter theme, providing cultural information and encouraging students to further explore the chapter topics on their own.
  • Expanded grammar coverage includes superlatives, negation, direct and indirect object pronouns, and future tense. "Contrôle des connaissances" sections have been added to chapters 4 (present subjunctive forms), 5 (direct object pronouns "le," "la," "les"), and 6 (tenses of "avoir" and "être"). Optional, more advanced, grammatical topics are also now included in the "Fiches Grammaire" Appendix. Topics include inversions, the expression "ne…que," negative expressions, "future antérieur," relative pronouns "ce qui," "ce que," "ce don't," adjectives that change meaning, past participle agreements, and more.
  • QUANT À MOI offers more opportunities for discussion by distributing these activities evenly throughout the chapters. New "Reprise" activities in both the MANUEL DE CLASSE and the MANUEL DE PREPARATION provide additional recycling activities that help students learn and internalize each lesson. The new section "Et vous?" includes vocabulary and communicative activities related to the interview topics as well as an active vocabulary list.
  • The Fourth Edition is integrated with the latest teaching and learning technologies. Icons in the text indicate where students can turn to Heinle iRadio for MP3-ready grammar tutorials and mini-lessons, giving students the freedom to choose when, where, and how they practice. Google™ Earth icons indicate where students can use Google™ Earth coordinates to virtually visit each exciting Francophone geographic location featured in the text.
  • QUANT À MOI prepares students for upper-division work through a process approach to discussion and writing in the context of current issues. In addition, each chapter includes a literary text related to the chapter themes. These texts introduce students to more advanced reading opportunities, facilitating the transition as they progress to more advanced courses.
  • Praised by reviewers for its highly communicative approach, QUANT A MOI…: TÉMOIGNAGES DES FRANÇAIS ET DES FRANCOPHONES, 4e emphasizes meaningful in-class communication and in-depth exploration of Francophone cultures—enabling students to embrace French culture, not just the language. Chapters focus on such content themes as current social issues, work, and the forces that will affect our future.
  • The program's unique structure maximizes student learning and understanding of Francophone cultures. Students use the MANUEL DE PRÉPARATION outside of class to refine grammatical competence, develop writing skills, and work on reading and listening comprehension, thus allowing class time to be devoted to meaningful communicative activities.
  • The program is built around "témoignages," interviews with French and Francophone speakers of various ages and backgrounds, who were interviewed specifically for QUANT À MOI on all the chapter themes. Excellent models for speaking and writing, the "témoins" offer an authentic way to introduce cultural topics and vocabulary while emphasizing the development of listening comprehension skills.
  • Pedagogically, the program builds on themes, structures, vocabulary, and skills learned in beginning French courses, while at the same time moving students to a more abstract level of language usage. In doing so, students learn to work with more extended discourse and to deal with the cultural and sociological—as well as practical—aspects of the topics studied.

“I feel that [QUANT À MOI] is truly the most culturally-contextualized second-year book on the market at the present time. A few years back, we did an extensive survey of the book with our students. Students were actually satisfied with the text in the following ways: 1) they felt more confident in their use of grammar; 2) they believed that the workbook really helped them perfect certain written structures; 3) they were excited to have been able to discuss 'real' issues in French; 4) they learned many interesting similarities and differences in terms of French and U.S. culture; 5) they recognized cultural myths and stereotypes. They really favored the approach to Francophone culture that is not merely isolated into small culture sections highlighting a particular country.”

“This program challenges students to improve their French by listening to French-speakers from all over the world discuss various aspects of their lives in significant detail. Appropriate for intermediate-level French learners, this culture-rich program is especially good at preparing learners for immersion in the Francophone world.”
