Overview

The Fourth Edition of the popular intermediate text MITLESEN-MITTEILEN offers explicit strategies to help students approach authentic texts through an intriguing collection of short stories that reflect current themes in German culture.

Larry D. Wells, Late of SUNY, Binghamton

Professor Larry D. Wells (late) was respected by all who knew him as an outstanding teacher of German who loved the German language and wanted to make it accessible to students. He championed student-centered, communicative learning that made students active partners in the classroom. Professor Wells received his Ph.D. from Ohio State with a specialization in 19th century German literature. His publications, "Literary Texts in Language Instruction," Mitlesen-Mitteilen: Literary Texts for Reading, Speaking & Writing (with Rosmarie T. Morewedge) and Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik, Wiederholen und Anwenden, are considered by most educators in German as benchmarks in the field of German language instruction.

Rosmarie T. Morewedge, SUNY, Binghamton

Professor Rosmarie T. Morewedge joined SUNY Binghamton in 1970. She has been Chair of the Department of German, Russian, and East Asian Languages since 1988. Professor Morewedge received her Ph.D. in German with a minor in folklore and Indo-European Mythology from UCLA in 1974. Her teaching and research focus on the German language and literature, the development of narrative-including the fairy tale-- from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century and medieval feminist studies. Strongly interested in international education, she is faculty director of Binghamton University's study abroad programs in Graz, Austria and in Leipzig, Germany. She is actively involved in various professional societies and is currently working on several different research projects. Throughout her career, Professor Morewedge has received numerous awards for her excellence in teaching and service.
  • Strategy-based readings with pre-reading activities ("Vor dem Lesen") familiarize students with texts they are about to encounter; vocabulary expansion is encouraged by activities linked to the creation of a "Stichwörterliste" on which key expressions are collected and organized.
  • Post-reading comprehension activities ("Leseverständnis") help structure recall and analysis of the text.
  • Discussion questions ("Diskussion") foster appreciation and understanding of the texts as literature, while encouraging students to relate to topics and themes to their own lives and interests.
  • Student-generated vocabulary selection activities ("Wortschatzaufgaben"), as well as practice of useful expressions in the "Sprechakte" section, assist student in the active mastery of vocabulary.
  • "Kontexte" sections provide helpful cultural background information in advance of the "Aufsatzthemen" writing sections. These sections are preceded by writing tips, focusing on aspects of grammar usage and style. Some of the writing topics encourage students to use the themes and ideas in the stories as a springboard for their own creative writing.
  • The varied choice of texts, which represent a panorama of literature from all three German-speaking countries, includes both historical and recent writers.
  • Discussion of literary elements provides an excellent foundation for upper-level courses.
  • MITLESEN-MITTEILEN's modular approach allows instructors to use the chapters in any sequence.
  • In the Fourth Edition, each chapter ends with a set of "Zum Hören" listening activities. These listening texts are of lesser linguistic difficulty than that of the readings texts and the relatively short but more challenging "Kontexte." The activities include pre-listening and post-listening components. Key vocabulary to access the listening texts is presented in the "Vor dem Hören" section, as well as information about the performer or author. The Text Audio CD, packaged with each new copy of the text at no additional cost, includes the listening text for each chapter.
  • The reading, speaking, listening, and writing activities in MITLESEN-MITTEILEN are learner-centered to facilitate genuine exchange of information, ideas, reactions, and opinions.
  • Communicative, group activities emphasize student-to-student learning and the use of functional speech tools to help shape discussion of texts, providing a focus on meaning and a focus on form.
