Overview

MindTap® Anthropology for CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY: MAPPING CULTURES ACROSS SPACE AND TIME is the digital learning solution that helps instructors engage and transform today's students into critical thinkers. Through paths of dynamic assignments and applications that you can personalize, real-time course analytics, and an accessible reader, MindTap helps you turn cookie-cutter into cutting-edge, apathy into engagement, and memorizers into higher-level thinkers. This product encourages students to link the conceptual tools that anthropologists use with real-world situations they face every day. Innovative activities such as a visual locator map of all of the text's EthnoCases, interactive GIS Story Maps, and the Anthropologist’s Toolkit prompt students to understand core concepts while connecting them to their lives. CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY: MAPPING CULTURES ACROSS SPACE AND TIME focuses primarily on six key regions of the world, and weaves each region throughout all 14 chapters through in-depth EthnoCases. Students not only explore the histories of these regions but also follow key ethnic and cultural groups across both time and space, developing their knowledge and understanding of the changes and challenges the people of these regions face. Students come away from this text with invaluable anthropological conceptual and research tools, insights, and perspectives, as well as an informed perspective on cultural differences and change over time.

Janice E. Stockard, Stanford University

Janice E. Stockard received her PhD in anthropology at Stanford University in 1985. Before her extensive doctoral field research in South China, she worked among Bay Area Native Americans to evaluate a Bureau of Indian Affairs urban relocation program. Maintaining this interest in applied anthropology, she has served as social science advisor to two national organizations dedicated to increasing women’s participation and retention in Information Technology industries. She is currently a Distinguished Practitioner at the Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford University. Spanning the globalization of textiles, gender, and technology, effects of technological and economic change on family and marriage, and women in IT industries, her career has many facets. For more than 25 years, Dr. Stockard has enjoyed teaching across the range of educational settings: private research and large state universities as well as small liberal arts colleges and at sea (on the MV Explorer). This broad experience and her emphasis on an ethnographic case-based approach to anthropology have inspired her part in Mapping Cultures across Space and Time.

Evelyn Blackwood, Purdue University

Evelyn Blackwood is Professor of Anthropology and affiliated faculty in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, American Studies, and Asian Studies at Purdue University. Dr. Blackwood received her MA in anthropology from San Francisco State University and her PhD from Stanford University. Author of numerous journal articles and books, her work investigates the critical intersections where local, state, and transnational processes meet individual understandings and experiences of gender, sexuality, identity, and kinship. She explores these topics through two related areas of ethnographic research: the study of a matrilineal society in West Sumatra, Indonesia, and the study of the social construction of sexualities and genders, focused on Indonesia and the United States. Dr. Blackwood was awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholarship for her research on emerging sexual and gender identities in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. In addition to several articles on the topic, she wrote the award-winning monograph Falling into the Lesbi World: Desire and Difference in Indonesia (2010). This book explores the complexities of gender and sexuality in Indonesia for trans-identified masculine tombois and their girlfriends. Her current project combines anthropology and history to explore the construction and negotiation of identity, selfhood, and community among baby boomers in the United States, focusing on women in the first generation of “out” lesbians in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1970s.
