Overview

The LABORATORY HANDBOOK FOR GENERAL CHEMISTRY helps students perform their laboratory work more effectively, efficiently, and safely. It is not a compilation of experimental procedures, but rather, throughout three editions, it remains a "how-to" guide containing specific information about the basic equipment, techniques, and operations that are necessary for successful laboratory experiments. The importance of laboratory safety is stressed. Video demonstrations of a number of common laboratory techniques are an important feature of this Third Edition. The Handbook can be used in conjunction with CER modular experiments, to support locally written experiments, or to complement the techniques sections of commercial lab manuals.

Conrad L. Stanitski, Franklin and Marshall College

Conrad L. Stanitski is currently a Visiting Scholar at Franklin and Marshall College and is Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the University of Central Arkansas. He received his B.S. in Science Education from Bloomsburg State College, M.A. in Chemical Education from the University of Northern Iowa, and Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Connecticut. He has co-authored chemistry textbooks for science majors, allied health science students, non-science majors, and high school chemistry students. Among Dr. Stanitski's many awards are the American Chemical Society (ACS) George C. Pimentel Award in Chemical Education, the CMA CATALYST National Award for Excellence in Chemistry Teaching, the Gustav Ohaus–National Science Teachers Association Award for Creative Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Thomas R. Branch Award for Teaching Excellence and the Samuel Nelson Gray Distinguished Professor Award from Randolph-Macon College, and the 2002 Western Connecticut ACS Section Visiting Scientist Award. He was Chair of the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Education (2001) and has been an elected Councilor for that division. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). An instrumental and vocal performer, he also enjoys jogging, tennis, and reading.

  • A brief item about cleaning up around balances after use has been added.
  • The text places emphasis on the practical. Explanations are succinct and to the point. Heavy use is made of illustrations.
  • The laboratory safety chapter concludes with a laboratory safety agreement for students to sign and hand in, plus a laboratory safety quiz.
  • Illustrations and names of general laboratory equipment and glassware also include the purpose and use of each item.
  • Most commonly used reference tables are included in the Appendix.
  • Additional sheets of graph paper are included at the back of the book.
