Overview

Rod Plotnik and Haig Kouyoumdjian's modular, visual approach to the fundamentals of psychology makes even the toughest concepts engaging and entertaining. As the pioneer of what’s become known as the “visual” or “magazine style” text, Plotnik's Introduction to Psychology remains the one developed on the strongest foundation of visual learning theory and research. Each and every page of the text is individually planned, written, and formatted to effectively incorporate the use of Visual Cues, which help students to better remember information. The text also utilizes “chunking,” a method of breaking concepts down into small, easily digested sections that help students learn at their own pace, and give instructors great flexibility in planning their courses. The Ninth Edition features a contemporary new design, over 500 new visuals, timely new topic coverage, and over 1,000 new references, all from recent years. The authors’ commitment to visual learning is extended into their text’s comprehensive ancillary package, the cornerstone of which is the multimedia PowerStudy. Updated and now available on DVD, PowerStudy 4.5 is a unique and unusually effective study guide.

Rod Plotnik, San Diego State University

Rod Plotnik earned his Ph.D. as a biological psychologist from the University of Florida and a post doctorate at Yale University. Early in his career, he realized the effectiveness of teaching students through visuals to get them excited about the material, a technique he utilizes throughout INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY, now in its Tenth Edition (Cengage Learning, 2014).

Haig Kouyoumdjian,

Haig Kouyoumdjian's interest in psychology was sparked when he used Rod Plotnik's INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY in his first psychology course. He later received a Master of Arts in psychology at San Diego State University, where he had the opportunity to work closely with Rod Plotnik, who at the time was a professor in the department and supervisor of the graduate teaching associates training program. Dr. Kouyoumdjian later earned his Ph.D. as a clinical psychologist from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He has been teaching undergraduate psychology courses and authoring introductory psychology textbooks ever since.
  • New topic coverage. New and expanded topics include the evolutionary approach to psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, genetic testing, cyber therapy, MP3 players and deafness, motion illusions, emotional intelligence in romantic relationships, as well as careers in psychology.
  • Thoroughly updated research base. The ninth edition includes over 1,000 new references, the majority from very recent years, providing students with access to the most up-to-date studies and findings and integrating developments in the related areas of biology, genetics, and cognitive neuroscience throughout the text. New research is presented for topics such as universal facial expressions, phantom limb syndrome, and cell phone usage while driving.
  • Even better visual learning. The ninth edition has an entirely new, contemporary design with a rich palette and graphically dynamic features to capture and hold the attention of today’s students, This edition also includes over 500 new photos and custom illustrations to ensure that the Visual Cues students have are as meaningful and effective as possible in supporting their understanding of each concept or topic.
  • New module-opening case examples. Nearly half of the ninth edition’s modules open with new case examples. Individuals introducing module topics now include Shawn Carter (a.k.a., Jay-Z), Charlie Sheen, and Kiran Bedi (India’s first female officer). Additionally, new, timely examples appear throughout the text’s modules.
  • New features content. New and updated content appears throughout the text’s Diversity, Research Focus, Application, and Critical Thinking features. For example, this edition offers nine new Critical Thinking articles, with titles that range from “Texting, How Distracting Can It Be?” and “Brain-Boosting Drugs, Myth or Fact?” to “Can Bad Memories be Erased?” and “Can Virtual Reality Be More than Fun and Games?”
  • Distinctive Learning Approach Plotnik's modular organization, Visual Cues approach, and “chunked” information help students engage with and enjoy learning the fundamentals of psychology while allowing them to work at their own pace. In addition, the modular organization offers instructors great flexibility in planning their courses.
  • Integrated Custom Illustrations The greatest evidence of the authors’ unparalleled commitment to providing the right visuals that truly make abstract and difficult concepts more tangible is the text’s extensive custom illustrations program, which comprises more than 250 original works by artist Tim Jacobus.
  • Module-opening case examples present a diverse range of individuals’ experience that not only capture students’ attention but illustrate the everyday applications of psychological principles. Students consistently credit these “stories” with helping them to understand the concepts subsequently presented throughout the modules.
  • Engaging and substantive features. Diversity, Research Focus, Application, and Critical Thinking features appear in every module, providing students with opportunities to broaden and challenge their understanding of topics and concepts.
  • Proven study aids that extend the text’s visual approach. The Visual Cues that accompany topic and concept discussions are repeated in the text’s popular Concept Reviews and Summary Tests to further support students’ learning. Additionally, Links to Learning conclude each module, providing not only key term review but previews the learning resources available on the text’s cornerstone ancillary, PowerStudy 4.5 (DVD format). This multimedia study guide is unique in that extends the visual approach from the book to its ancillaries.
