Overview

INTERACTION is a complete program offering unparalleled support for the study of culture, literature, and language at the intermediate level. This edition offers a broad range of cultural and literary content, and concise, yet thorough grammar explanations. INTERACTION combines the best of a complete grammar text and a literary and cultural reader in one convenient, one-book format. Each theme-based chapter encourages students to expand linguistic and cultural knowledge through readings and communicative activities. The Seventh Edition makes even greater use of different applications of technology to learning-both in and out of the classroom-including a new video program and iLrn™ French, a powerful all-in-one online solution that helps you level the playing field and manage your course.

Susan St. Onge, Christopher Newport College

Susan St. Onge is a distinguished professor of French at Christopher Newport University. In addition to INTERACTION, Susan and Ronald St. Onge are co-authors of LA CIVILISATION FRANÇAISE EN ÉVOLUTION, Volumes I and II.

Ronald St. Onge, College of William and Mary

Ronald St. Onge, a native French speaker, is Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the College of William and Mary. Both Ron and Susan are visible figures in the language community, well-respected for their successful and effective textbooks and their dedication to students. Ron is praised for his exceptional selection of cultural and literary readings for INTERACTION, while Susan’s grammatical explanations have been lauded as “practical and concise.”
  • The cultural material--both High-C and related aspects of contemporary culturehas been streamlined and distributed throughout the chapter. Each chapter now opens with the contemporary culture that students find most interesting (Un peu de culture contemporaine). The High-C cultural component (L'héritage culturel) and short cultural notes (Notes culturelles) appear at a variety of different junctures within the units in order to provide more manageable cultural segements and to provide more opportunity for rich discussion of culture throughout the units.
  • To synthesize the linguistic and cultural content of the chapter, a variety of new activitiesmore open-ended, creative, and challengingare now interspersed throughout each chapter. Students pass immediately from practice with individual structures to usage of those structures. Many new types of activities have been created for each unit to augment the possibilities for pair and small group work.Grammar activities have been revised to enhance their effectiveness.
  • The important "Interactions" now follow almost every grouping of related grammar points to allow for immediate practice of concepts in realistic contexts and to provide frequent interactive material for pair and group work. The completely revised and enhanced activities, often accompanied by a realia, give students the opportunity for guided personal expression and encourage students to activate the material they've learned to that point.
  • Pre-listening activities have been added to the audio-based activities of the "A l'écoute" feature to parallel the pre-reading activities that precede the reading selections.
  • A brand new video program reflects both French and francophone lifestyles while modeling the functions, grammar, and vocabulary presented at the intermediate level. Each segment represents a complete teaching unit filled with drama, culturally authentic situations and culturally-appropriate language. Students are exposed to both the modern-day and historical situations that render France and the francophone world what they are today. Follow up activities in the new "A l'écran" segments of the Workbook/Lab Manual assess students' understanding of the situations and provide a starting point for cultural comparison and discussion.
  • The "Situations" have been separated into "Situations orales" and "Situations écrites" to clearly delineate activities with a focus on writing from those with a focus on oral communication. These activities continue to allow students further practice with the vocabulary and structures of each unit in both oral and written contexts.
  • The "Liens culturels" have been expanded to include a series of capstone discussion activities designed to help students make connections between the cultural information presented and the literary and contemporary readings that conclude each chapter.
  • New CengageNOW (formerly iLrn™ French) provides students and instructors with an all-in-one online solution for the intermediate French course. With CengageNOW, everything students need to master the skills and concepts of the course is built right in to this dynamic audio- and video-enhanced learning environment, including: an audio-enhanced eBook with integrated activities; companion videos; an interactive VoiceBoard; an online workbook; an online lab manual with audio; interactive enrichment activities; diagnostic activities that generate a personalized study plan for each student; and access to online live tutoring with a French teaching expert through vMentor™.
  • A completely revised workbook provides new oral and written activities which progress methodically from comprehension to expression; it also offers a new section "Prononcez bien!" that focuses on a specific phonetic difficulty that students may encounter in each given chapter. The written activities offer practice on every point of structure in the unit, culminating in a suggested composition featuring a process-oriented writing approach that incorporates web-based research; a realia-based writing activity complete this section. In addition, the new section "A l'écran!" provides activities based on appropriate segments of the new video program that accompanies the book.
  • Many of the selections in the literary reading section, "A lire", have been replaced with readings of enhanced diversity and student interest level and to provide maximum instructional flexibility. "A lire" now features two different readings: "Text littéraire" and the new "Texte de culture contemporaine" which features a short contemporary reading focusing on the cultural theme of each unit and more closely ties the reading activities to the functional aspects of the chapters.
  • The "Exercices de vocabulaire" has been revised to ensure that students get more productive practice with key vocabulary items, and the popular Lexique personnel feature now immediately follows the vocabulary exercises to provide more open-ended practice with the vocabulary that is constantly recycled throughout each unit.
  • The most fundamental principle underlying INTERACTION is to accommodate students of virtually every background and level of preparation. A complete, clear review is provided of all basic structures in French, and all activities are contextualized and are graded from discrete point exercises through very open-ended activities that allow students to use the language in realistic contexts. All four skills are addressed, and in this edition, cultural material is included, and readings in each chapter both enhance the cultural theme of each unit and focus on reading skills development. Today's INTERACTION represents the only text that users need in order to create a complete intermediate program.
  • Long lauded for the clarity and thoroughness of its grammar presentation, INTERACTION 's grammar explanations (Structures) are clear enough to be used communicatively in class or to be assigned outside of class for self-review. Accompanying activities move students from discrete-point practice to more communicative situations in which they can practice using what they have learned.
  • "Rappel!" sections contain concise explanations to help clarify the more difficult grammar points. These sections give students added guidance where concepts may be a bit more challenging.
