  • NEW: A video, Les Stagiaires, created specifically for Horizons integrates the vocabulary and grammar from each chapter into a storyline of two new interns working at an office. Their daily interactions and adventures with their co-workers depict real-life uses of French in a variety of situations, allowing students to practice listening skills with the vocabulary and structures they have studied up to that point. Brief episodes appearing in the Reprise section of each chapter are accompanied by viewing activities.
  • NEW: The Sélections Musicales sections have been expanded to include the use of French music as an engaging way to teach culture, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In addition to the presentation and activities occurring after every two chapters, there will now be student notes in each Compétence suggesting francophone songs that illustrate the use of the vocabulary or grammar being studied. These songs are all easily found and downloadable via iTunes™, and include a variety of types of music from different francophone countries. In the new edition, these student notes are called Sélections musicales, and the more extensive treatment of songs with pre- and post-listening activities found every other chapter were renamed Interlude musical. Over half of the songs in these sections have been replaced with new selections.
  • NEW: Pronunciation activities have been added after each pronunciation explanation providing students with additional practice opportunities of this important skill.
  • NEW: A completely new art program and interior design. Illustrations have been updated and redrawn with a more consistent and contemporary-looking style.
  • NEW: Over thirty interactive web-based grammar modules accompany the new edition, providing students with alternate grammar explanations and additional practice opportunities. These modules are designed to facilitate better student comprehension of difficult grammar topics. The grammar modules will be available on the new Premium Website and the iLrn Heinle Learning center.
  • UPDATED: The geo-cultural openers, along with the Notes culturelles, and the end-of-chapter Comparaisons culturelles have been updated to present the very latest cultural evolutions.
  • UPDATED: The Workbook / Lab Manual has been reorganized into one complete Student Activities Manual, with the listening / speaking practice and the writing activities for each Compétence grouped together, instead of in separate sections.
  • NEW: A new, more robust testing program provides a greater variety of testing options.
  • HORIZONS has a clear, easy-to-follow structure, with each chapter organized by four color-coded "Compétence" sections based on a specific language function. This organization facilitates effective instruction and enhances student learning.
  • HORIZONS strongly emphasizes the importance of effective learning strategies with expanded reading and listening strategies and reading and writing strategies included throughout the text. Reading and writing activities include an appealing mix of literary readings, magazine-style articles, and song lyrics.
  • Grammar review sections called "Résume de grammaire" are located at the end of each chapter to reinforce the student-friendly organization by summarizing new grammar from the chapter on a two-page spread to make for easy student review.
  • The "Lecture et Composition" section in each chapter helps students become better writers through a range of process-based writing tasks, including taking notes, exchanging compositions with classmates, and producing short pieces of written work. In-text icons also indicate where the Système-D, the French Writing Assistant, can provide additional writing help.
  • A broad array of culture-based activities, notes, and readings set in a different part of the French-speaking world brings culture to life for students. Chapter-ending "Comparaisons culturelles" encourage students to make cross-cultural connections, while "Notes culturelles" sections provide unique and valuable sociolinguistic insights.
  • "Interlude Musical" sections integrated into the text use French songs and accompanying activities to aid comprehension, engage student interest, and bring the sounds and structures of French alive. A playlist is available through the HORIZONS Website, and songs are available for purchase at the ever-popular and student-friendly iTunes Store. Lyrics are available on the PowerLecture: Instructor's Resource CD-ROM.
  • HORIZONS is user-friendly for instructors of all backgrounds and includes annotations to indicate lesson plans, suggest additional activities, and provide further cultural and linguistic information. Visual support for new vocabulary and structures, concise and clear grammar explanations, and self-checks and grammar reviews also make learning easier for students.

"Horizons is a well-rounded program which does a good job of balancing communication and mechanics in language learning."

"…I like the general organization of the book, the presentation, the modernity of the characters and the stories. I also like the scope and sequence and the student activities is absolutely great. I would add that it's very student friendly and that it can also be easily used at home. I would say it's a good learning tool with of lot of possibilities for each type of learners."

"Horizons is a very thorough, interactive program with ample opportunities for different types of learners. The activities are relevant and the exercises are repetitive enough to ensure acquisition of the French language at the introductory level."

"Horizons is well-contextualized. It features a wide variety of Francophone areas and cultural information, which is increasingly important in our world today."

"I am thrilled to find out about the new online recourses. I will also be glad to use a new video…"

"I love the format and activities of the book… the teaching assistants loved the grammar explanations and the activities…"

"Dynamic and exciting for students, thoughtful and logical presentation of material for teachers. There are abundant, interesting materials for student self-study and a surfeit of materials from which a teacher can assign homework or in-class activities or exercises. This text and its components provide extraordinary flexibility for instructors."

"A well-conceptualized language program providing the instructor with the tools to teach a challenging course…"
