Help your students improve their grades and understanding of concepts with with this value-packed Hybrid Edition of Darrell Ebbing's GENERAL CHEMISTRY, 10th edition. An access code to OWLv2 with MindTap Reader is included with the text, providing students with powerful online resources that include tutorials, simulations, randomized homework questions, videos, a complete interactive electronic version of the textbook, and more! The 10th edition continues to offer the signature clear explanations, macro to micro orientation, and enhanced problem-solving strategies that have made the book a best-seller. Featuring a new design and a significantly enhanced art program that convey the excitement of chemistry, this Hybrid Edition provides students with even more learning support through a new "Gaining Mastery Toolbox" feature in all examples, more micro-macro presentations, new two-tier questions, and a new end-of-chapter "Checklist for Review."

Darrell D. Ebbing, Wayne State University

Darrell Ebbing has taught general chemistry for more than thirty years and is now retired from Wayne State University. He received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Indiana University.

Steven D. Gammon, University of Maine Fort Kent

Steven D. Gammon is the Provost at the University of Maine Fort Kent. In this role he continues to be engaged in working to provide exceptional educational experiences for students in chemistry, the sciences and other disciplines.
  • Exceptional Value: The access code to OWLv2 with MindTap Reader included with the text provides your students with an opportunity for unlimited problem-solving practice and powerful online resources such as tutorials, simulations, randomized homework questions, videos, an interactive electronic version of the textbook, and more.
  • A new user-friendly design: The book's beautiful new design conveys to students the sense of excitement surrounding chemistry.
  • An extensively revised and enhanced art and photography program: Highlighting the excitement of chemistry while explaining key concepts, the book's superior art program now includes more micro-macro presentations and new "talking labels" in art and photos that talk students through the figure and explain what they are seeing and what they need to know.
  • A new "Gaining Mastery Toolbox" feature in all examples: Every toolbox contains "Critical Concepts" (concepts from the relevant chapter that the student needs to know in order to work through the example) and "Solution Essentials" (a list of information needed to solve the problem presented, such as the periodic table, Avogadro's number, etc.).
  • New and revised end-of-chapter problems: Many of the 10th edition's end-of-chapter problems are new or revised, and questions now include a new type of strategy problem.
  • New two-tier questions: The first tier questions ask a student a question and then ask them to choose the answer. The second tier questions ask students why they chose that answer. Together, these questions ensure that students understand the concept demonstrated.
  • New end-of-chapter "Checklist for Review": Presented in an easy-to-follow tabular format that includes a summary of facts and concepts, learning objectives, important terms, and key equations, this innovative presentation is organized by section.
  • Up-to-date coverage: The latest changes in chemistry are woven into every chapter.
  • Provocative essay questions: General Problem essay questions based on the "A Chemist Looks At . . ." and "Instrumental Methods" boxed essays allow instructors to more easily integrate interesting real-life applications into their course and promote the development of scientific writing skills.
  • Chapter-opening learning aids: Chapter openers include Contents and Concepts outlines as well as a three-part collage combining a macroscale photo, a molecular Image, and an associated real-world application.
  • Contemporary "A Chemist Looks At . . .' essays: These popular essays include such contemporary topics as "Gecko Toes, Sticky but Not Tacky" and "Magic Numbers."
  • In-chapter examples that enhance student problem-solving skills: Consistent with the authors' three-part problem-solving approach (Problem Strategy, Solution, and Answer Check), the book's examples model how to solve a problem.
  • A wealth of end-of chapter support strengthens students' conceptual understanding: Chapters end with a Checklist for Review with Important Terms and Key Equations and a Summary of Facts and Concepts; Learning Objectives Outlines that optimize student review and instructor preparation, as well as multiple-choice Self-Assessment and Review Questions, multi-step Concept Explorations, and rigorous Strategy Problems.
  • A wide range of end-of-chapter problem types: Designed to strengthen students' conceptual understanding, end-of-chapter problem types include multiple-choice Self-Assessment and Review Questions, multi-step Concept Explorations, and rigorous Strategy Problems.

Lab Manual Experiments in General Chemistry

ISBN: 9781305944985
Each experiment in this manual was selected to match topics in the textbook and includes an introduction, a procedure, a page of pre-lab exercises about the concepts the lab illustrates, and a report form. Some have a scenario that places the experiment in a real-world context and there are experiments designed for inquiry learning with limited guidance. For this edition, minor updates have been made to the lab manual to address some safety concerns. A new reminder was added to the safety section of the preface reminding readers to consult manufacturer’s data sheets. Experiment 5A was removed completely due to the use of mercury. Experiment 5B includes a new safety reminder in the experiment procedures cautioning students to use no more than one gram of potassium chlorate. Experiment 22A has been removed completely due to concern about the skin contact hazards.
