Overview

This complete movement education resource for early childhood and physical education professionals teaches students the importance of movement in the physical, emotional, and educational growth of children. The text is the only one of its kind to teach movement's role in traditional child development areas--physical, affective, and cognitive--as well as to detail musical and creative development. EXPERIENCES IN MUSIC AND MOVEMENT, Fifth Edition, presents an entire movement program, including lesson planning, guidelines for music selection and usage, developmentally appropriate teaching methods, and tried-and-true tips for creating and maintaining a positive learning environment with children on the move.

Rae Pica, University of New Hampshire

Rae Pica is the founder and director of Moving & Learning (www.movingandlearning.com) and has been a children's physical activity specialist since 1980. A former adjunct instructor with the University of New Hampshire, she is the author of 18 books, including the award-winning GREAT GAMES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN and JUMP INTO LITERACY. Rae is known for her lively and informative workshop and keynote presentations and has shared her expertise with such groups as the Sesame Street Research Department, the Head Start Bureau, Centers for Disease Control, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Nickelodeon's Blue's Clues, Gymboree, and state health departments throughout the country. Rae also served on the task force of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) that created national guidelines for early childhood physical activity, and is a member of several advisory boards. In addition, Rae is cofounder of the BAM Radio Network (www.bamradionetwork.com) and host of an Internet radio program called "Body, Mind and Child," for which she interviews experts in education, child development, play research, the neurosciences, and more. She also co-hosts, along with Jerlean Daniel, executive director of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, NAEYC Radio.

  • Expanded and updated coverage of technology reflects the increasing use of technology tools in the classroom.
  • A new video feature, integrated into the text with reflection questions, introduces videos that further illustrate key concepts. Videos are available for viewing at the Early Childhood Education Media Library.
  • Learning Objectives have been added at the beginning of each chapter, providing students with a roadmap to key ideas to be discussed.
  • Additional information about obesity helps to further illustrate the importance of movement and music in children's daily lives.
  • New and improved sample activities assist students in developing their own movement and music programs.
  • New podcasts of BAM Radio interviews--identified by in-text notations and accessible on the Book Companion Website--allow students to gain insight from experts in early childhood education on best practices and topics related to music and movement.
  • Add infant-based content to your course with information that is appropriate for use with newborns and babies.
  • Help your students learn how to address the growing problem of sedentary children, and understand the impact of inactivity on weight and health.
  • Show students how to weave music and movement into their days with lesson plans, music selections, and developmentally appropriate teaching methods that prepare them to make movement a part of every lesson.
  • Offer enhanced learning and research opportunities with practical chapter assignments.
  • Guide students to additional resources with helpful website URLs at the end of each chapter, and end-of-text references to sources for ordering recordings, musical instruments, equipment, and more.
  • Meet the needs of students and practitioners who teach or will teach children ages birth to eight years, with this one-of-a-kind movement and music resource.

"It is well-written, easy to read, and supplies enough information that my students are able to grasp the basics of music and movement with young children. It does not continually repeat topics throughout the text as some textbooks do. Each chapter has its own defined characteristics and personality, yet they all support the main topic of music and movement education."

"This is the most relevant textbook out there for an early childhood music and movement course! It includes all the important components for the class and students seem to enjoy reading the book."
