Overview

With a reputation built on clear and concise exposition, numerous examples, and plentiful problem sets, Kaufmann and Schwitters' ELEMENTARY AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: A COMBINED APPROACH consistently reinforces the following common thread: learn a skill; practice the skill to help solve equations; and then apply what you have learned to solve application problems. This traditional, straightforward approach has helped many students grasp and apply the fundamental problem-solving skills necessary for future mathematics courses. Algebraic ideas are developed in a logical sequence, and in an easy-to-read manner, without excessive vocabulary and formalism. The Sixth Edition's open and uncluttered design helps keep students focused on the concepts while minimizing distractions. Problems and examples reference a broad range of topics, as well as career areas such as electronics, mechanics, and health, showing students that mathematics is part of everyday life. The text's resource package—anchored by Enhanced WebAssign, an online homework management tool—saves instructors time while providing additional help and skill-building practice for students outside of class.

Jerome E. Kaufmann, Western Illinois University (Retired)

Jerome E. Kaufmann received his Ed.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Virginia. Now a retired Professor of Mathematics from Western Illinois University, he has more than 30 years of teaching experience at the high school, two-year, and four-year college levels. He is the author of 45 college mathematics textbooks.

Karen L. Schwitters, Seminole Community College

Karen L. Schwitters graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.S. in Mathematics. She earned an M.S. Ed. in Professional Secondary Education from Northern Illinois University. Schwitters is currently teaching at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida, where she is very active in multimedia instruction and is involved in planning distance learning courses with multimedia materials. She is an advocate for Enhanced WebAssign and uses it in her classroom. In 1998, she received the Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology Award.
  • New and updated problems and revised content, based on user and reviewer feedback, provides increased variety and currency.
  • The Sixth Edition of Elementary and Intermediate Algebra: A Combined Approach includes new and updated problems and revised content based on reviewer feedback. The authors have created Learning Objectives, mapped both to the Problem Sets and Chapter Summaries, which show professors the learning outcomes fulfilled by the material, and which tell students why they are learning that material. Video tutorials for selected Learning Objectives are available in a variety of formats.
  • NEW Concept Quizzes allow students to check their understanding of the material before proceeding to the homework assignment, and the new grid format of the Chapter Summaries makes reviewing fast and easy. Finally, the authors have written Classroom Examples in both student and instructor editions, with answers appearing only in the Annotated Instructor's Edition, so that students will be able to work through the Classroom Examples with their instructor.
  • CHAPTER TESTS appear at the end of each chapter and provide students with ample preparation and practice for "real" tests.
  • Answers to Chapter Review Problem Sets, Chapter Tests, Cumulative Review Problem Sets, Appendix B Problems, and the odd-numbered homework exercises appear at the end of the text.
  • CLEAR-CUT 3-STEP PROBLEM-SOLVING APPROACH. Kaufmann and Schwitters' straightforward, 3-step problem-solving approach is introduced and reinforced throughout the textbook: Learn the algebraic skill; use the skill to help solve equations; and apply the skill to solve the application problem.
  • THOUGHTS INTO WORDS problems, included in every problem set except the review exercises, are designed to give students an opportunity to express in written form their thoughts about various mathematical ideas.
  • FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS, included in many of the problem sets, offer more challenging exercises and lend themselves to small group work. They also provide the instructor with flexibility in incorporating advanced mathematical topics depending on specific course needs.
  • CUMULATIVE REVIEW problem sets help students remember skills that were introduced earlier.
  • PROBLEM SETS, a focal point of every revision, contain a wide variety of skill-development exercises. Problems have been added, deleted, and reworded based on users' suggestions.
  • CHAPTER REVIEW PROBLEM SETS give students additional practice of previously learned concepts.
