Overview

¡DÍMELO TÚ!: A COMPLETE COURSE, 6e (with Audio CD) is a communication-driven book with CD program designed to help students develop competency in Spanish by allowing them to interact among themselves and with their instructors on a daily basis. The competency approach challenges students to arrive at an understanding of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures by tapping into knowledge they already have and applying it to what they are learning. ¡DÍMELO TÚ! encourages students to take an active roll in their progression, emphasizing the students' responsibility in learning and assigning the role of facilitator to the instructor. The new edition features an enhanced cultural focus, extensive multimedia integration with strong ties to authentic and personal Web 2.0 content, and more.

  • NEW iLrn™: Heinle Learning Center: Everything students need to master the skills and concepts of the course is built into this dynamic learning environment! The iLrn: Heinle Learning Center allows you to assign, assess, and track progress with a click of the mouse. It includes an audio-enhanced eBook, assignable textbook activities, companion videos with pre- and post-viewing activities, partnered voice-recorded activities, an online workbook and lab manual with audio, interactive enrichment activities, and a diagnostic study tool to better prepare students for exams.
  • ENHANCED CULTURAL FOCUS: Opportunities to help students achieve cultural awareness are enhanced in the Sixth Edition through authentic visuals, cultural readings, journalistic texts, literary pieces, and strong ties to online Web 2.0 content. This edition also boasts new video segments that transport students to Cuba and Bolivia. Highly visual "Noticiero cultural" sections provide important demographic information for countries of focus as well as interesting facts. Students can expand on this information with guided Internet-exploration activities.
  • EXTENSIVE MULTIMEDIA INTEGRATION: In addition to helpful Smart Classroom suggestions for instructors, the Sixth Edition encourages instructors and students to go beyond the book to access authentic and personal Web 2.0 content from YouTube, Google Images, iTunes, and pod casts. In addition, the new integrated, multimedia Resource Center makes it easier for your students to use all the e-Resources you select using this one-stop online portal.
  • CONTEXTUALIZED VOCABULARY PRESENTATIONS: In keeping with the authors' philosophy of providing comprehensible input and guided output, active and passive vocabulary terms are presented in the context of a dialogue or an interview and are supported by two-tier activity chains. In this edition, this aural input (available on the Text Audio CD) is tied to contemporary Hispanic culture, often featuring Spanish-speaking personalities rather than artificial characters. In this way, the language becomes tangible and real. Redesigned "Eres buen observador?" sections consistently introduce the new active vocabulary of the lesson, taking the form of advertisements, magazine covers, newspapers, pamphlets, and more to give students valuable practice with new vocabulary and with interpreting authentic language.
  • COMPREHENSIVE SKILLS PRACTICE: New writing activities, contributed by Eliud Chuffe at the University of Arizona, are correlated to the Atajo 4.0 CD-ROM: Writing Assistant for Spanish for easy reference and writing help. In addition, "El rincón de los lectores" chapter readings, which occur in the third Paso of every chapter, now feature a wider variety of reading selections including advertisements, magazine articles, poems, excerpts from novels and short stories, "trabalenguas", and "refranes".
  • Students learn to write in Spanish using the process writing approach in a meaningful writing activity at the end of the second Paso in every chapter. Additional writing practice occurs throughout the chapter as students prepare for communicative activities and role-plays. The "Cuaderno de actividades" provides writing practice with the specific grammar structures presented in each chapter as well as opportunities for creative writing. Students continue to improve their skills throughout the text as they practice new listening, reading, and writing strategies in every chapter.
  • Listening skills are developed through dialogues and narratives contained on the Text Audio CD. The "Saber comprender" sections provide real-life listening opportunities in class through audio recordings and videos. Students also get extensive listening practice by doing the activities in the "Práctica auditiva" section of the Workbook/Lab Manual and the new video activities in the "Cuaderno de actividades" section of the Workbook/Lab Manual.
  • Out-of-class exercises enable extensive in-class discussion and exploration. Function-driven grammar appears at the end of each chapter in a section appropriately titled "En preparación." Students are asked to study specific grammar points on their own before coming to class and to complete written grammar exercises that demonstrate comprehension of the grammar structures studied.
  • The text's extended cultural focus greatly enhances the knowledge and exposure students have to the Spanish-speaking world. The beginning of each chapter clearly lays out its specific cultural focus, showing what country or countries will be presented and what related cultural topics will be addressed in the "¿Sabías que?" and the "Noticiero cultural" readings, the text-specific video, and the Internet activities.
  • Expanded activities provide opportunities for students to sharpen their critical thinking skills. "¡Las fotos hablan!" sections in the chapter openers provide visual input that allows students to express prior knowledge they may have about the country they are studying. In a similar manner, the "En tu opinión" sections consist of a series of wide-ranging critical thinking questions added to the "¿Sabías que?" cultural mini-readings. Students are able to express their opinions—and often their preconceived ideas—about various aspects of the country being studied.
  • Target vocabulary is introduced in the context of contemporary Hispanic culture. Each in-class lesson begins with the "¿Qué se dice?" section, where students listen to Spanish-speaking personalities using new vocabulary and structures. Communicative activities in each Paso begin with vocabulary practice based on the "¿Qué se dice?" dialogues, continue with guided practice in "Ahora, ¡a hablar!", and progress to more open-ended communicative practice in "Y ahora, ¿por qué no conversamos?" sections. Students develop true competency as they role-play in "¡Luces! ¡Cámara! ¡Acción!"

"I will continue to use DÍMELO TÚ because I really feel that the other textbooks don't pay attention to the differences amongst countries in a significant way and DÍMELO TÚ is very comprehensive. I never feel that my beginner students will become culturally incompetent intermediate learners."

"We like the particular way that the package implements a 'communicative approach'. Specifically, we like the students studying the grammar on their own (the colored pages) and then coming to class prepared to put the theory into real-life practice, particularly in small-group activities."

"DIMELO TU is an organized and interactive program; especially important is the fact that you [as the instructor] are the facilitator."

"I liked the organization and sequence of materials presented. I enjoyed very much the different exercises and how these were linked. The exercises were contextualized so I never felt lost as I went through the review of the text materials. I also enjoyed how dynamic the exercises were. Another aspect of the textbook that I considered an asset is the opportunity the text gives the instructor and the students to interact with realia from the web inside and outside the classroom."

"Integration of culture through various means (Noticiero cultural section, Youtube research, iTunes references). This is great!"

"I would describe this manuscript as being a nice mixture of culture, grammar, and vocabulary, with tremendous opportunities for guided discovery and investigation for the students. Technology is used and incorporated throughout the manuscript, which is very important for this group of learners (millennials). The well-structured and realistically organized chapters, with the suggestions for internet searches, would be a great addition to my course."

"¡DÍMELO TÚ! is a well-designed, carefully thought out text that is culturally rich and which provides exposure to the variants of Spanish used around the world. It has clearly explained grammar presented in context. There is a nice balance between the contemporary and the classic, both in terms of content and media, and is likely to appeal to programs wishing to get their students talking in the target language and, at the same time, ensuring that they have a solid introduction to the Hispanic world."

"I would describe the book as one which lets the student take responsibility for his or her learning while freeing more time in the classroom for real communicative practice."
