Overview

In twelve theme-based units, LITERATURA Y ARTE presents a balance of male and female voices representing important literary contributions of the Spanish-speaking world and introduces students to the rich and diverse contributions of Hispanic artists to the fine arts. Part of the renowned three-volume INTERMEDIATE SPANISH series, this reader integrates artistic content into every chapter, as well as biographical information on authors, artists, and movements.

  • Readings have been added to represent a greater variety of voices. In an effort to include more humor two new readings are featured: Beatriz Guido (Argentina) contributes a humorous re-telling of the "Little Red Riding Hood" in "Caperucita roja o casco rojo" which serves as an example of family obligations; and Ana Lydia Vega (Puerto Rico) details the trials and tribulations of being a pedestrian in San Juan in "Un deseo llamado tranvía," making use of the popular language of the island. In a third new reading, José Donoso (Chile) describes the solitude of the city dweller in "Una señora," in the unit on Hispanic cities.
  • The Ninth Edition of the INTERMEDIATE SPANISH series is accompanied by an extensive collection of resources to provide a flexible, supported teaching and learning experience, including vMentor (our complimentary live, online tutoring service), Atajo 4.0 CD-ROM Writing Assistant for Spanish, the Heinle Voices Literary Database, and the book companion website with extra grammar and vocabulary practice and Internet search activities.
  • A new "¿Desea más?" feature at the end of the reading selection in each unit correlates alternative readings from the Heinle Voices Literary Database to the chapter theme.
  • The book's new unit openers feature more detailed description of the content and include a new "Cine" segment that suggests a popular Spanish-language film to further illuminate the chapter's cultural or historical theme. "Cine" segments add visual art to the text's presentation as well as analysis of thematically related films to the content possibilities. There are also correlations to the other ancillaries in the programincluding the two accompanying books in the series CONVERSACIÓN Y REPASO and CIVILIZACIÓN Y CULTURAand a chapter map to make the information more accessible and easier to review.
  • To help students write about the literature and art studied, the Atajo 4.0 CD-ROM: Writing Assistant for Spanish is integrated into the text's writing activities.
  • Internet activities have been expanded to include more searchable links, exposing students to a greater variety of artistic and cultural elements. Each unit ends with a group research activity inviting Internet use.
  • Each chapter presents a brief essay about an artist from the Spanish-speaking world followed by several representations of that artist's work.
  • The book helps develop students' reading skills and introduces them to certain literary and cultural concepts that enhance their comprehension of the unique qualities of Spanish-speaking civilization.
  • Readings that expose students to literature are level appropriate and thematically linked to the core text, CONVERSACIÓN Y REPASO.
  • Exercises precede each literary reading to introduce students to new vocabulary, to develop the reading skill, and to lead them into the theme of the selection.
  • LITERARURA Y ARTE exposes students to literature, film, and art while supporting the grammar they have learned in the core text.
  • "¡A explorar!" sections at the end of each unit offer a variety of exercises that encourage students to give personal opinions about the readings and art studied, invite them to conduct further research, and include writing tasks supported by Atajo 4.0 CD-ROM: Writing Assistant for Spanish.
  • CONVERSACIÓN Y REPASO, the core grammar and conversation text, and CIVILIZACIÓN Y CULTURA and LITERATURA Y ARTE, the two readers in the program, can be used independently or in conjunction with one another.
