Overview

Steven and Susan Zumdahl's CHEMISTRY 8e brings together the solid pedagogy, easy-to-use media, and interactive exercises that today's instructors need for their general chemistry course. For the Eighth Edition, the authors have extended this approach by emphasizing problem-solving strategies within the Examples and throughout the text narrative. Students are provided with the tools to become critical thinkers: to ask questions, to apply rules and develop models, and to evaluate the outcome. In addition, Steven and Susan Zumdahl crafted ChemWork, an online program included in CHEMISTRY'S technology package, to support their approach much as an instructor would offer support during office hours. ChemWork is just one of many study aids available with CHEMISTRY that supports the goals of the textbook—a strong emphasis on models, real world applications, and visual learning.

Steve Zumdahl is the author of market-leading textbooks in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, honors-level chemistry, and high school chemistry. Recently retired from his long-time position as Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to chemical education. These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his BS in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his PhD from the University of Illinois.

Susan A. Zumdahl, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Susan A. Zumdahl earned a B.S. and M.A. in Chemistry at California State University--Fullerton. She has taught science and mathematics at all levels, including middle school, high school, community college, and university. She is past director of the Merit Program for Emerging Scholars in Chemistry at the University of Illinois. In addition, she spearheaded the development of a sophisticated web-based electronic homework system for chemistry and is co-author on several chemistry textbooks.
  • New Problem-Solving Strategy boxes focus the student's attention on the very important process of problem solving, helping them learn to think like chemists.
  • "Chapter 3: Stoichiometry" contains a new section: "Learning to Solve Problems". This new section enables students to understand that thinking their way through a problem produces long-term and meaningful learning, rather than simply memorizing steps which are often quickly forgotten.
  • This edition introduces a series of questions into Chapters 3-6's Examples sections to again engage the students in the process of problem solving. This more active approach helps students think their way through the solution to the problem.
  • "Chapter 4: Types of Chemical Reactions and Solution Stoichiometry," now gives a more qualitative and intuitive method for balancing oxidation reduction equations that is based on oxidation states. The "half-reaction method for balancing oxidation-reduction reactions" was moved to "Chapter 18: Electrochemistry" in order to cover the more complicated equations later in the text.
  • In order to make Chapter 15 more manageable for students, the authors have split this chapter in two: "Chapter 15: Acid-Base Equilibrium" and "Chapter 16: Solubility and Complex Ion Equilibrium."
  • The program's step-by-step approach helps students master chemistry concepts more efficiently by using examples in the text paired with worked-out solutions. In addition, CHEMISTRY includes Margin Notes that provide problem-solving tips and reminders, Step boxes that highlight the main concepts in a section, and a range of end-of-chapter questions.   • CHEMISTRY's unique organization covers equilibria and acid-base chemistry early, and delays coverage of atomic theory and bonding until the second half of the text. The text includes sections on Exact Treatment of Buffered Solutions (Chapter 8), Adiabatic Processes (Chapter 10), and Molecular, Rotational, Vibrational, Electronic, and Nuclear Magnetic Spectroscopy (Chapter 14).
