Overview

Caminos, Third Edition, promotes and inspires language learning by exposing beginning Spanish students to the diversity of cultures and language in the Spanish-speaking world. Caminos fosters speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills within a highly motivating and content-rich cultural context. Meaningful and useful vocabulary and grammar provide structural and thematic frameworks, which spiral throughout the Caminos program. The program's systematic pacing and recycling of material supports students as they advance their capabilities from description to narration to analysis and argumentation in Spanish. Students of varying backgrounds and ages as well as those who have different learning styles all experience linguistic growth and cultural acquisition through both written and oral activities.

  • New! Streamlined chapter organization simplifies the unit structure with two pasos, each containing grammar and vocabulary presentations, a graphic novel episode, and a cultural note, and concluding with a reading and writing section and vocabulary summary.
  • New! Caminos del jaguar graphic novel episodes in each chapter parallel and summarize the video episodes in easy-to-understand Spanish text. Ideal for assigning either independent of the video or as an advance organizer to prepare students for viewing, these episodes are accompanied by comprehension questions, a role-play activity, and a cultural note.
  • New! Enhanced video organization and support includes new video activities for each episode in a video manual; brief voice-over introductions in English for each episode on the DVD; video clips that highlight key expressions or phrases students will hear; and an onscreen summary with questions about the episode.
  • New! Music, art, and literary features in Artes y letras sections expose students to the rich cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world, showcasing works by artists and excerpts by writers from the featured region. Follow-up comprehension activities reinforce linguistic practice of these cultural themes.
  • Diverse cultural contexts integrated throughout the program include vocabulary presentations, Notas culturales, and Lecturas enriched with information on the traditions, pastimes, and geography of a wide variety of Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Input-rich presentation of vocabulary and grammar offers authentic and author-generated texts and graphics that illustrate the lessons in context to reinforce learning and highlight the use of structures and vocabulary in everyday life.
  • Process approach to reading provides students with specific strategies for reading diverse texts, supported by a variety of pre- and post-reading exercises, comprehension checks, personalized questions, and expansion activities; a process framework for approaching writing activities includes brainstorming, outlining, and peer review.
  • Integrated video support features an award-winning mystery-adventure video story, Caminos del jaguar, as an engaging vehicle for introducing themes related to Mayan culture and the countries featured in the episodes.
