Overview

In the new edition of BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, authors Cecie Starr, Christine A. Evers, and Lisa Starr have partnered with the National Geographic Society to develop a text designed to engage and inspire. This trendsetting text introduces the key concepts of biology to non-biology majors using clear explanations and unparalleled visuals. While mastering core concepts, each chapter challenges students to question what they read and apply the concepts learned, providing students with the critical thinking skills and science knowledge they need in life. Renowned for its writing style the new edition is enhanced with exclusive content from the National Geographic Society, including over 200 new photos and illustrations. New People Matter sections in most chapters profile National Geographic Explorers and Grantees who are making significant contributions in their field, showing students how concepts in the chapter are being applied in their biological research. Each chapter concludes with an 'Application' section highlighting real-world uses of biology and helping students make connections to chapter content. Helping visual learners, "Figure It Out" questions in many illustrations ensure students understand the concepts. Data Analysis Activities at the end of every chapter help students strengthen their analytical skills. "Take Home Messages" ensure students grasp key concepts. Helpful media options include the interactive Aplia program that connects with today's students. Throughout this issues-oriented text, the authors emphasize that biology is an ongoing endeavor carried out by a diverse community of people and prepare students to make decisions that require an understanding of the process of science and basic biological principles.

Cecie Starr,

For two decades, Cecie Starr secured her place as one of the bestselling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect, but now, instead of building houses, she builds -- with care and attention to detail -- incredible texts based on this philosophy: "I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice."

Christine Evers,

Christine Evers (B.S. in Biology, State University of New York at Stony Brook) has been creating multimedia and web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. After working as a research assistant studying developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied Evolutionary Biology and honeybee behavior. She has a strong interest in science education and serves as a member of her local school board.

Lisa Starr,

Lisa Starr (B.A. in Chemistry/Biochemistry, University of California at San Diego, Revelle College) became an expert in molecular and cellular biology as she helped to build a veterinary virology research program at the biotech firm Syntro. She also spent seven years at The Scripps Research Institute and founded two other biotech firms. Since 1997, Lisa has been responsible for much of the art in the Starr BIOLOGY textbooks and has been a coauthor of the series since 2004.
  • The new edition of BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS was developed in partnership with the National Geographic Society, an organization known for eye-opening photography and a legacy of inspiring people to care about biology and the environment that supports it. The result is a text that combines clear explanations with unparalleled visuals to bring core concepts into focus.
  • New People Matter sections in most chapters profile National Geographic Explorers and Grantees who are making significant contributions in their field, showing students how concepts in the chapter are being applied in their biological research.
  • Each chapter concludes with an ‘Application’ section highlighting real-world uses of biology and helping students make connections and deepen understanding of concepts.
  • The visually-appealing and accurate art program helps visual learners with step-by-step art, Figure It Out” images, and animated figures.
  • The entire text has been enhanced visually throughout. Key Concepts with thumbnail images are reiterated in the visual summaries, and stepped out figures and “Figure It Out” figures help students along the way.
  • Data Analysis Activities provide students with the opportunity to work with real data, further strengthening analytical skills and providing insight into contemporary research.
  • Take-Home Message at the end of each section poses a question that reflects the critical content of the section and answers the question in bulleted list format so students grasp the key concepts.
  • On-page running glossary provides immediate help with the language of Biology and aids reading comprehension.
  • Digital options include Aplia for Biology, a homework solution that reinforces course concepts, and MindTap for Biology, which combines readings, multimedia, activities, and assessments into a singular learning path. The MindTap media includes pop-up tutors that help explain key topics with short video explanations.
  • The text balances concepts and applications. All points necessary for developing an understanding of a basic concept are on a single page or two facing pages so students can focus on one topic at a time and digest information in manageable segments.
