Overview

Clear, engaging, and visual, BIOLOGY: A HUMAN EMPHASIS equips non-biology majors with the science they'll need in life! Renowned for its writing style and trendsetting art, the new edition includes an enhanced visual pedagogy, learning features, and media options. Chapter opening case studies and "How Would You Vote?" questions make the material relevant to students, new section-ending "Take Home Messages" ensure they grasp key concepts, and the clear art program enables them to visualize. Helpful media options include the interactive Aplia program that connects with today's students. Providing selected chapters from the issues-oriented BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, this text is ideal for courses that emphasize human applications.

Cecie Starr,

For two decades, Cecie Starr secured her place as one of the bestselling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect, but now, instead of building houses, she builds -- with care and attention to detail -- incredible texts based on this philosophy: "I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice."

Christine Evers,

Christine Evers (B.S. in Biology, State University of New York at Stony Brook) has been creating multimedia and web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. After working as a research assistant studying developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied Evolutionary Biology and honeybee behavior. She has a strong interest in science education and serves as a member of her local school board.

Lisa Starr,

Lisa Starr (B.A. in Chemistry/Biochemistry, University of California at San Diego, Revelle College) became an expert in molecular and cellular biology as she helped to build a veterinary virology research program at the biotech firm Syntro. She also spent seven years at The Scripps Research Institute and founded two other biotech firms. Since 1997, Lisa has been responsible for much of the art in the Starr BIOLOGY textbooks and has been a coauthor of the series since 2004.
  • The entire text has been enhanced visually throughout. Key Concepts with thumbnail images are reiterated in the visual summaries, and stepped out figures and "Figure It Out" figures help students along the way.
  • New Data Analysis Activities provide students with the opportunity to work with real data, further strengthening analytical skills and providing insight into contemporary research.
  • New Take-Home Message at the end of each section poses a question that reflects the critical content of the section and answers the question in bulleted list format so students grasp the key concepts.
  • vNew on-page running glossary provides immediate help with the language of Biology and aids reading comprehension.
  • New media options include the interactive Aplia program as well as CengageNOW and WebTutor for Blackboard and WebCT featuring new pop-up tutors that help explain key topics with short video explanations.
  • PowerLecture for Starr's BIOLOGY: A HUMAN EMPHASIS makes it easy for you to create customized lectures. Each chapter includes the following features, all organized by chapter section: lecture slides, new "What's Wrong with This Picture" slides, all chapter art and photos, bonus photos, animations, videos, PowerBibliography, Instructor's Manual, Test Bank, Examview testing software, JoinIn polling and quizzing slides, and everything else you need. This "buffet" of media resources is at your fingertips and is included on one DVD.
  • The text balances concepts and applications. All points necessary for developing an understanding of a basic concept are on a single page or two facing pages so students can focus on one topic at a time and digest information in manageable segments.
  • The visually-appealing and accurate art program helps visual learners with step-by-step art, Figure It Out" images, and animated figures.
  • A chapter opening case study begins each chapter by exploring a current event or controversy directly related to the chapter's content. Students see the relevance of the material and revisit the case at the end of the chapter.
  • "How Would You Vote?" questions accompany the chapter opening case studies and ask students to consider biology-related news, explore the facts behind the issue, apply knowledge, and cast a vote.
