Overview

Solomon/Berg/Martin, BIOLOGY -- often described as the best majors text for LEARNING biology -- is also a complete teaching program. The superbly integrated, inquiry-based learning system guides students through every chapter. Key concepts appear clearly at the beginning of each chapter and learning objectives start each section. Students then review the key points at the end of each section before moving on to the next one. At the end of the chapter, a specially focused Summary provides further reinforcement of the learning objectives. The ninth edition offers expanded integration of the text's three guiding themes of biology (evolution, information transfer, and energy for life) and innovative online and multimedia resources for students and instructors.

Eldra Solomon, University of South Florida

Dr. Solomon has written several leading college-level textbooks in biology and in human anatomy and physiology. Her books have been translated into more than 10 languages. Dr. Solomon earned an M.S. from the University of Florida and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. Dr. Solomon taught biology and nursing students for more than 20 years. In addition to being a biologist and science author, Dr. Solomon is a bio-psychologist with a special interest in the neuro-physiology of traumatic experience. Her research has focused on the neurological, endocrine, and psychological effects of trauma, including Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and development of maladaptive coping strategies. Dr. Solomon has presented her research at many national and international conferences, and her work has been published in leading professional journals. Dr. Solomon has been profiled more than 30 times in leading publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in the World.

Linda Berg, St. Petersburg College

Dr. Berg is an award-winning teacher and author who taught for 17 years at the University of Maryland in College Park. It was at this institution that she received numerous teaching and service awards. Dr. Berg is also the recipient of many national and regional awards including the National Science Teachers Association Award for Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Nation's Capital Area Disabled Student Services Award, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Award in University Science Teaching.

Diana W. Martin, Rutgers University, New Brunswick Campus

Dr. Martin is Professor Emeritus and former Director of General Biology, Division of Life Sciences, Rutgers University. Dr. Martin received an M.S. at Florida State University, where she studied the chromosomes of related plant species to understand their evolutionary relationships. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied the genetics of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and then conducted postdoctoral research at Princeton University. Dr. Martin has taught General Biology and other courses at Rutgers for over 30 years and has been involved in writing textbooks since 1988. She is immensely grateful that her decision to study biology in college has led to a career that allows her many ways to share her excitement about all aspects of biology.
  • NEW Expanded integration of the text's three guiding themes of biology -- evolution, information transfer, and energy for life -- in the new chapter opening essays, narrative, summaries, and concept links.
  • NEW "Research Method" figures expand upon visual and concise coverage of the essential experiments and processes in biology and the process of science.
  • NEW Increased emphasis and examples on evolution throughout the text.
  • NEW End of chapter "Science, Technology, and Society" questions that apply the material to relevant issues and develop critical thinking skills.
  • NEW Enhanced and updated coverage throughout, including a new separate chapter on viruses.
  • NEW Enhanced and Improved Art Program for better student learning.
  • The robust art program clearly illustrates concepts and animated figures enable students to interact with the material online to reinforce their understanding.
  • Time-saving teaching resources include PowerLecture (a one-stop tool that makes creating interest-grabbing multimedia lectures an easy process), online resources and homework, and more.
  • The inquiry-based learning system guides students through every chapter. Reinforcing the learning system, "Key Point" statements accompany many figures and "Key Experiment" sections encourage students to evaluate investigative approaches that real scientists have taken.
  • "Inquiring About" boxes explore issues relevant to students' lives, providing a forum for discussing topics of current interest in more detail. Hundreds of examples throughout the book demonstrate the connections between the laboratory and real life.
  • Strong end-of-chapter support drives critical thinking and review, offering detailed Summary with Key Terms sections, Analyzing Data, Evolution Links, and Critical Thinking questions.
