Overview

ALLIAGES CULTURELS: LA SOCIÉTÉ FRANÇAISE EN TRANSFORMATION is designed for those who have completed at least two years of French language study. The text enriches students' knowledge of France and French society in the 21st century through the analysis and interpretation of textual artifacts, while it develops their advanced linguistic capacities. ALLIAGES CULTURELS begins with a general introduction to the study of another culture, and then is organized thematically into four parts which systematically address the larger core question: Qu'est-ce qu'être français aujourd'hui?

Heather Willis Allen, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Heather Willis Allen is an assistant professor of French and Second Language Acquisition at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Allen's research interests include foreign-language teacher development, literacy-based language instruction, and language-learning motivation. In addition to presenting at conferences, Dr. Allen's articles have appeared in the ADFL Bulletin (2010), the French Review (2009), the L2 Journal (2010), the Modern Language Journal (2010), the NECTFL Review (2008), From Thought to Action: Exploring Beliefs and Outcomes in the Foreign Language Program (2007), Principles and Practices of the Standards in College Foreign Language Education (2009), and Sociocultural Research on Second Language Teacher Education: Exploring the Complexities of Professional Development (2011). Heather received her Ph.D. in French/Education from Emory University in 2002.

Sébastien Dubreil, University of Tennessee - Knoxville

A native of Nantes (western France), Sèbastien Dubreil moved to the U.S. in 1994 and received his Ph.D. in French/Education from Emory University in 2002. His research interests include the definition of culture in the foreign-language classroom, its place in the curriculum, and the methods of assessment of the acquisition of culture. Dr. Dubreil has extensively investigated the use of multimedia technologies (video and the Internet) in the teaching of culture in the foreign language classroom. He also is interested in French and Francophone cinema and enjoys teaching film. He was awarded the 2009 College of Arts and Sciences Junior Faculty Teaching Award.
  • Chapters begin with a list of linguistic and cultural objectives, as well as a list of "Expressions de base" related thematically to the materials in the chapter. Organized by parts of speech, these expressions help to scaffold student comprehension of and communication about chapter themes and materials.
  • "Entrée en matière" introduces students to the focus of the chapter through historical references and definitions of related cultural concepts. To facilitate comprehension, this section concludes with one or more "Question(s) de comprehension" and several "Questions de réflexion" that help move students from comprehension of factual information to interpretation and discussion of that material.
  • Students analyze and reflect on several textual artifacts related to each chapter's theme in "Texte à analyser". These include a wide variety of text types, such as newspaper and magazine articles, literary texts, songs, speeches, and survey data. Extensive scaffolding accompanies each text, moving from pre-reading activities ("Avant de lire") to comprehension activities ("En lisant"), and culminating with interpretation and discussion activities ("Après avoir lu").
  • Video-based materials ("Première personne") feature interviews conducted with French speakers. Similar to the written texts, these sections also move from pre-viewing ("Avant de regarder l'interview") to comprehension ("En regardant l'interview"), and finally to discussion activities ("Après avoir regardé l'interview").
  • "Rappel!" sections contain a concise review of linguistic material, as well as contextualized examples and practice activities linked thematically to the chapter theme.
  • Each chapter concludes with an "Activité de synthèse", designed to assess students' understanding of the chapter's theme through a summative task, either oral or written.
  • The text's Premium Website offers online materials for instructors and students.
