Overview

ADDICTION TREATMENT covers the biological, psychological, and social aspects of alcoholism, eating disorders, compulsive gambling, and other addictions. The authors bridge the gap between twelve-step and harm-reduction approaches. Through first-person narratives, students will discover a realism not commonly found. The authors also include a variety of topics, to illustrate the importance of reducing harm within the biopsychological framework that ties this product together. Updated to reflect the DSM-5, this edition also includes the latest insights into social determinants of health, trauma-informed care, working with transgender populations, and other timely topics.

  • The authors include extensive material on the treatment needs of clients involved in the criminal justice system (including drug courts) while presenting the case that addiction should be treated as a public health problem rather than a criminal offense.
  • Comprehensive coverage of a range of addictive problems, including gambling, alcoholism, eating disorders, cocaine addiction, and recent drug problems such as opioid addiction and use of synthetic marijuana -- is paired with case examples that help students apply text concepts to the real world.
  • Students learn about client-centered approaches, such as the strengths perspective and motivational interviewing, which fall under the rubric of the harm reduction model. The authors believe that these evidence-based approaches best prepare students for working in the field of substance abuse treatment today.
  • An analysis of current U.S. drug policies and related social justice issues enables students to understand how these issues are intertwined with addiction treatment.
  • Treatment innovations, including trauma-informed care, pharmaceutical treatments, gender-specific programming, and the European approach to addiction, are included throughout the text to give students a complete sense of the field and the methods that are available to them.
  • This text is distinctive by nature of the timeliness of the material, the strengths-based treatment focus, the inclusion of behavioral addictions including gambling, and the didactic illustrations of motivational strategies.
  • Throughout the text, the authors emphasize the treatment of individuals with co-occurring disorders to illustrate the complexity of working with clients in a real-world setting.
